Melissa and David met while both were living in Los Angeles. It was February 1, 2004, the day Melissa's beloved New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Through friends of friends, Melissa and David ended up at the same Super Bowl party.
As luck would have it, Melissa almost didn't make it. After eating some bad hummus at lunch, by opening kickoff she was in pretty rough shape. But even food poisoning could not deter Melissa, and she curled up in the fetal position in front of a boy who introduced himself as David but said little else the rest of the game. Melissa thought he was put off by her disheveled appearance and frequent bathroom breaks. After all, the game was exciting: Adam Vinatieri missed a field goal, Carolina kept it close and Janet Jackson bared a boob. At the conclusion of the game Melissa peeled herself off the floor and got herself home to bed, wishing that she had felt well enough to chat with the mysterious David.
Almost three months passed, and through the same friends of friends, David ended up at Melissa's 25th birthday party. At some point the discussion turned to baseball and, to Melissa's horror, David admitted to being a New York Yankee fan. Melissa thought he was cute, but alas, she could never date a Yankee fan - that was a deal-breaker. In an effort to change her mind, David jumped, fully clothed, into the swimming pool. Melissa was not especially impressed, but thought she'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
A few days later Melissa and David met up in neutral territory, Dodger Stadium, for one of the Montreal Expos' last games. In the end, they were just happy to have found someone else who loved baseball as much as they did. And when they were still on speaking terms following the playoffs, they realized it might just be the start of something special.
UPDATE: For those of you wondering how Melissa and David fared this past Super Bowl, the wedding is still on.
